Mini zine exploring Carnival traditions and Galician mythology. A personal project and precursor to a graphic novel I am currently developing. Digital Illustration. 2025.
This short sequential comic draws on elements from my childhood and the cultural landscape I grew up surrounded by, particularly the Carnival traditions of Galicia, Spain. Figures such as the Cigarróns, Peiqueiros and Boteiros—traditional characters and powerful symbols of the Entroido—emerge from a vast mouth representing the “Can do Urco,” a monstrous creature from Galician mythology.The Can do Urco takes the form of an enormous black dog dragging chains as it rises from the sea. In this story, it becomes a threshold between two worlds: the earthly and the magical. Through this imagery, the comic explores childhood memories, local traditions and the mythological imagination that inhabits the landscape of Galicia.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME !
Hi! I’m Candela Kerze, a Galician illustrator based in Madrid.
I studied Fine Arts and later specialised in drawing and illustration through a Master’s degree in Artistic Creation and Research at the Complutense University of Madrid.I’ve worked on all kinds of projects, from concept art and festival artwork to book covers, film posters, infographics and everything in between. I love bringing a colourful and personal visual language to each project, while always leaving some space to experiment and try something new.My work is inspired by pretty much everything around me: the magical green forests of Galicia, internet culture, comics, manga, indie games, animation, legends, everyday stories and magical realism. I’m especially interested in the moment where the ordinary starts feeling a little strange.This year has been a turning point for me. After going through Hodgkin lymphoma, I’m taking the chance to reinvent myself as an artist, explore new ways of working and make room for more experimentation.Got an idea, a project, or just want to say hi? Project: Reinterpreting the Spanish Playing Card Deck (Process): OROS (Coins)
I’m sharing a little bit of my process as I design, create, and gradually build this updated version of the Spanish playing card deck.The characters featured are women or people with a more “feminine” appearance, as the Spanish deck is the only playing card deck in the world that does not include any female figures among its characters.I want to create an editorial project that brings the card games I loved playing with my grandparents to a more contemporary audience.This is NOT A FINAL PROJECT, but rather a showcase of the oros suit, which is already almost finished.I hope you enjoy it <3
